Coupeville Library Expansion -- Week 7

Week 7 proved to be a banner week in terms of visual changes at the Library expansion project. Pre-constructed wall panels arrived on Monday and by Tuesday evening the form of the new Library began to emerge. The photos below provide some detail of the changes as they occurred.

Wall panels arrived and were stacked on the concrete floor in the new addition.

Another photo of the pre-constructed wall panels just before the workman began putting them in place.

The first panels are in place!

Evidence of higher ceilings to come in some sections of the new addition.

More panels are raised and in place.

The building begins to take shape! This is the west side of the Library addition.

A view from the south side of the building. This high gable will be visible from Front Street in Coupeville and from the Coupeville Wharf.

Coupeville Library Expansion -- Week 6

This was a good week on the Library Expansion project. Forming for the concrete floor, insertion of the rebar, and completion of all plumbing, electrical and data piping under the concrete floor was completed by Thursday. At 7 AM on Friday, work began pouring the concrete floor and it was completed by noon. Below are some photos of the weeks work.

The forms and rebar are in place and awaiting concrete for the new floor.

Another view of the preparations for the concrete floor in the expanded section of the library.

This is Darren Leyenhorst, construction superintendent. He seems forever to be on the phone to keep things moving forward. We are about a week ahead of schedule currently.

The cement pump arrives at 7AM Friday -- ready to start pouring the new floor

In this photo, about 1/2 of the floor has been poured and the work continues.

The workman use a long vibrating device to assure the floor is level and that no voids occur under the surface. One workman is holding the hose that is delivering cement to be leveled.

Troweling begins. The workman on the right is doing the finish work along the edge of the floor.

As the cement hardens, a mechanical trowel is used to finish the surface

And here is the completed floor! The final troweling leaves a very smooth surface.

Some rock was brought in that will be used in the landscaping at the new entrance to the library.

Stig Carlson, architect, Jeanne Crisp, Sno-Isle, Ken Helms, Farber Construction, Darren Leyenhorst, construction superintendent, and Jim Theel contemplate how best to use this large rock as part of the landscaping at the new entrance to the library.

Coupeville Library Expansion -- Week 5

The white pipes are sewer lines that will be under the new concrete floor. The grey tubing
to the right are conduits for electrical and computer connections in the concrete floor. The
vertical white pipe is a sewer line vent that will extend through the roof of the new building.

This is the water line coming in from the street to provide fire sprinkler protection

These are water and sewer lines coming in from the street.

Floor cuts were needed in the old library concrete floor. These were required to install new water, sewer, electrical, and computer lines where needed in the new library floor plan. Note the
six inch thickness of the old library concrete floors.

The west wall of the library (on the expansion side) is removed. The library is now
fully air conditioned!!

Coupeville Library Expansion -- Week 4

The foundation walls for the expansion are poured and the forms removed

Roof shingles are being removed. No--they are not loafing, they are waiting for the truck
that hauls away the shingles to return.

All roof shingles have been removed

The foundation wall compartments have been filled and compacted with a special sand. Sand
was added about 6 inches at a time and compacted until it reached the top of the foundation
walls.

Coupeville Library Expansion -- Week 3

The foundation walls for the expanded building and formed up and ready to be poured

Here is how they do it--the cement is pumped from the truck to the fill the installed forms

OHere they are pumping over the roof of the building to the new walls on the opposite side

Cement was pumped over the roof of the building to new foundation walls on the north side

Coupeville Library Expansion -- Week 2

Forms are installed for the cement footings under the new wing of the library

The existing building interior is being cleared of all interior walls and floor coverings

More interior clearing inside the library

The footings are poured and made ready for the foundation wall to be formed and poured
